Christa
Born in Cologne, Germany, Christa came to SA in 1973. She took pottery lessons
with various professional pottery teachers before becoming a full time
potter in 1975. By 1994 the demand for her excellent work was so
great that she and husband, Peet found that they needed more space and
improved facilities. This led to the move to the delightful farm "Hexrivier"
in South Western Mpumalanga where they now produce a wide range of high
quality domestic ware, all usable articles that are oven,
microwave and dishwasher proof. She formulates and makes all her own
glazes, which are lead free and non hazardous.
These glazes are specially designed for reduction firing and Christa
personally does all the glazing and decorating by hand.
Peet The reduction Firing is done by husband Peet in the oil firing Kiln
designed and built by himself. A firing to 1350 Deg. C takes about fourteen hours with the reduction process starting at 1000 Deg. C and the reduction atmosphere maintained till shutdown. Following this it takes about 36 hours to cool sufficiently to open the kiln. This firing process needs constant attention to ensure a steady rise in temperature and to maintain the correct kiln atmosphere in order to ensure that a consistently high quality product is produced. Using his strong mechanical and electrical knowledge Peet has been a pillar of support to Christa building all the equipment used in the processing of the clay and production of pottery.
She has successfully taken part in various Regional and
National exhibitions.
